Teacher Information

Clara Heppleston – Head of Mathematics
I am delighted to introduce myself as the Head of Mathematics at Derby Cathedral School.
I studied Mathematics and Physics at Loughborough University and trained to teach at the University of Nottingham. Since then I have taught Mathematics for 14 years, in two different secondary schools, to pupils from age 11 to 18 and trained teachers too. Having been Assistant Head of Mathematics for 8 years, I am thrilled to join the leadership team at Derby Cathedral School and to start building a fantastic Mathematics department. I am keen to ensure that all pupils experience both success and challenge in their learning of Mathematics and to experience enjoyment in their Mathematics lessons. I am passionate about the need for young people to become resilient and reflective learners and I firmly believe in the power of Mathematics to enable students to develop these skills.

David Salter – Head of English
Hello parents, carers, students and the wider community. My name is David Salter and I have been appointed as the inaugural Head of English at Derby Cathedral School. As an experienced English teacher, I firmly believe that enjoyable English lessons, that provide your child with the opportunity to reach their potential, are the key to outstanding progress. I look forward to working with all stakeholders and particularly the students on this fabulous journey.

Jackie Stewart – Assistant Headteacher
I have been in Education for many years, having experience and skills in most areas of Secondary School Leadership and Management… My recent responsibilities have been in Timetabling, Curriculum, Student Options and Child Protection. Safeguarding has played a significant role throughout my career and successful counselling skills used to guide young people and adults alike. In May 2017 I decided that I needed a change of direction and started to look for something new. I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to apply to work at Derby Cathedral School and feel privileged to have been successful in my appointment as Assistant Headteacher. I am looking forward to working with students, parents, governors and the wider community to establish a school that will encourage everyone to aim high and achieve their best.

Ryan Hoy – Assistant Headteacher
My name is Ryan Hoy and I am currently Assistant Headteacher at a school in East London. Proud to be one of the founding teachers of my current school, I was drawn to the proposed ethos and plans for the newest secondary school in Derby. Working alongside a supremely talented staff body, I firmly believe that Derby Cathedral School will be underpinned by a culture where young people not only aim for the highest academic achievement, but also develop the essential skills to take the next steps in their lives. My experience in education covers a wide number of areas, from inclusion and behaviour to safeguarding, and I look forward to taking on new challenges in DCS. A proud modern linguist (Spanish), I very much look forward to working in partnership with parents, carers and the wider community.

James Emberley – Director of Music
I have been involved in music from a young age and I am still a very active musician both within and outside of education. As a performer I have been a member of many of the UK’s leading brass bands and performed at many of the leading venues across Europe and beyond. I have performed for television and radio and many leading music festivals including Latitude and Glastonbury. I studied music at the University of Salford, Royal Northern College of Music and then trained to become a teacher at Manchester Metropolitan University. Working as a sailing instructor was my first introduction to working with young people and ignited a passion for working to help students to achieve their potential. I have been teaching since 2009 and I am extremely excited about the being part of the team establishing Derby Cathedral School and the unique opportunity this presents. After working across the Creative Arts I am enthused about establishing Music as a key element of the school and one of its designated specialisms.

Mick Simpson – Head of Science
I am about to enter my tenth year of teaching having trained at the University of Nottingham. For the past 5 years I have held the role of Head of Biology at Colonel Frank Seely School in Nottinghamshire. What most enthused me about leading the Science Department at Derby Cathedral School was putting into action my ideas to mould learners to achieve outstanding outcomes, whilst igniting a real passion for science.

Mark Chapple – SENDCO
Mark has worked in a variety of Secondary Schools across the East Midlands and has nearly 10 years experience of working with students with additional needs. He is Masters qualified and holds Post Graduate qualifications in Special Educational Needs and Dyslexia. He is an established, qualified SENDCo and Access Arrangement Assessor with Senior Leadership experience.

Julie Dickinson – Religious Education
I am an experienced teacher who after a year’s sabbatical, is excited to be part of this new venture. I have a vast range of teaching skills and have taught numerous examination subjects over the years but my heart and specialism belong to Religious Education.

I have a charismatic approach to the subject, ensuring that every child reaches his/her potential whilst thoroughly enjoying the subject.

My roles in previous schools have included managing a Humanities department and leading Pastoral teams.

I firmly believe that education reaches far beyond the classroom and I have led many extended visits to countries in Europe and The Gambia. I am keen to introduce similar ventures at Derby Cathedral School.

Macey Amiss – Head of MFL
My name is Macey Amiss and I am extremely excited to start working as Head of Spanish at Derby Cathedral School. I studied International Business and Spanish at Aston University in Birmingham and completed my teacher training at Sheffield Hallam University. I have also had various opportunities throughout my life to live in Spain (Malaga, Gran Canaria and Madrid) which explains my absolute passion for the Spanish language and culture.

My main aim at DCS is to ensure that students find my lessons enjoyable, interesting and also challenging and therefore will enable all pupils to make excellent progress. Over the past couple of years, I have organised two successful school trips to Barcelona and I am keen to start planning a trip for next year so that pupils at DCS have the opportunity to experience Spain for themselves and learn even more about the life, language and culture.

I look forward to meeting all of the students, parents and carers in September and to start working with a fantastic team of staff at Derby Cathedral School.

Steven Fridlington – Art and Design
My passion is creativity and innovation and I am excited to have been appointed to the role of Teacher of Design Technology and Art. I have over ten years experience teaching a wide variety of DT and creative subject areas including Product Design, Engineering, Construction, Computer Aided Design, Programming, Graphics and Art. During this time I have enjoyed setting up extra curricular activities including organising and managing a Lego Mindstorms Robot Club.

Before teaching I gained a first class honours degree in Interior Design and then worked freelance as an Exhibition Designer. I have worked on a variety of Interior and exhibition projects including being part of the design team that set up the African Galleries at the British Museum in London.

My aim and ethos over the next year is to set up exciting learning environments where students will aspire to gain practical skills and self confidence to independently problem solve and think creatively.

Outside of school I have a wide range of interests. From a young age I have loved riding bikes and over the years I have travelled the country BMX racing and later downhill racing on mountain bikes. Riding is my passion and helps me to focus and keep fit.
