Young people and social media
Particularly following a weekend or school holiday, we are often asked to deal with issues relating to or stemming from social media. Whilst we will always try to assist, we would kindly ask that you consult the below image which clearly shows that for the children at Derby Cathedral School at present, all of whom are 11 or 12 years old, no social media site is legal. All are targeted at young people 13 years and above. This is one of the many reasons why we do not allow mobile phones to be used within school. Whilst we acknowledge the many positives that social media can offer when used legally and responsibly, we would ask that you engage with your son or daughter to assess their social media usage, if any. Our students are truly wonderful young people however social media can be an unwelcome and indeed intrusive influence in what is a formative stage of their lives.
Foreign Language Spelling Bee Success

Comic Relief: March 2019
We had a wonderful day on Friday 15th March to mark Comic Relief Day. A very large number of students brought in a wonderful array of baked goods which proved very popular at break and lunch time.
House points were awarded to all entries alongside four top prizes because ranking them proved impossible and some individual points for exceptional effort, creative design or volume.
In addition to the funds raised by students paying for the privilege of wearning non-uniform, we are delighted to confirm that we raised £267 for the charity.
We'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to any parents/carers who assisted in the baking, packing and transport of the baked goods to us on the morning of the 15th. Your support is very much appreciated as always.

Austria and Valencia Trips June 2019
Places for both the Austria and Valencia trips in June 2019 have now been allocated to students. As the Austria trip was oversubscribed, places were allocated by random selection following this morning's assembly. All students who expressed an interest for this trip were present for the random draw of names.
All students who returned a reply slip for Valencia have secured a place as it was not oversubscribed.
This is a reminder that for Austria only pupils need to be competent swimmers (i.e. able to swim 100 metres) and also be competent at riding a bicycle.
We would kindly ask that you now make your £100 deposit payment via ParentPay. The deadline for this is Friday 23rd November 2018. Should we not receive your deposit by then, your son or daughter's place will be allocated to another student on the waiting list. Deposits are non-refundable.
*Important: By giving consent for your child to take part in this trip and paying the deposit, you are agreeing that if your child's attendance drops below 95% or their behaviour gives cause for concern, their place will be withdrawn and no refund will be given. Places will be withdrawn at the Headteacher's discretion.

Enrichment Week Trips June 2019
A letter was sent home last week detailing the three trips that we plan to run during Enrichment Week next June. This letter will appear on the Schoolzine app in due course.
We are at the stage of gauging potential interest for these trips-two of which are overseas residential-by way of asking for deposits and reply slips. Should a trip not meet the minimum numbers, deposits will be refunded however in all other cases deposits are non-refundable.
Due to the nature of Enrichment Week, it is only possible to attend one of the three trips.
After reading the letter, please don't hesitate to contact us should you have any queries.
A full and engaging programme of in-school activities will be on offer for those who do not attend the residential trips.
Boys' Futsal Tournament
On Wednesday 24th October the boys represented Derby Cathedral School at the DCSSP Year 7 Futsal tournament held at Noel Baker School.
This was an event of many firsts: the first time any team had ever represented Derby Cathedral School, the first time the boys had played together, and of course the first time other schools and students in the surrounding area had the pleasure of playing against us.
The boys first played Derby Moor and after a very confident start drew 0-0, going on to play St Benedict's B team winning 2-0, Tyrell scoring Derby Cathedral's first ever goal. The boys then qualified for the next round and played a superb game against St Benedict's A which finished 2-0.
They then faced Noel Baker in the final. After full time and a very evenly matched game the score was 0-0. After some excellent saves from Jake the score remained 0-0 after golden goal time. Lewis, Tyrell and Jozua bravely stepped up and volunteered to take the penalties in a very tense finale but unfortunately we just missed out, losing 3-1 on penalties.
Despite finishing the tournament in second place overall the boys now move on to the County finals in December.
Well done boys we are extremely proud of your achievements.
Girls' Futsal Tournament
On Tuesday 6th November the girls represented Derby Cathedral School at the DCSSP Year 7 Futsal tournament held at Noel Baker School.
The girls were determined to follow in the boys' footsteps and they most definitely kept their promise.
Eight teams entered the competition and Derby Cathedral School came away as champions, securing a place at the County finals in December.
The girls played 5 games in total and results were as follows:
Derby Cathedral 0 v Silverhill 0
Derby Cathedral 1 v Oakwood B 0
Derby Cathedral 2 v Noel Baker 1
Derby Cathedral 2 v Chellaston 0
Final: Derby Cathedral 3 v Silverhill 2
All the girls played extremely well, the goal scorers were Aleena, Charlotte and Caitlin. Faith saved a penalty during the final to secure the overall win for Derby Cathedral School.
Well done girls we are extremely proud of your achievements.
Children in Need: Friday 16th November 2018
The recently elected Student Council have voted on which national charity events should be supported by a non-uniform day here at Derby Cathedral School. Discussion with Mr Inglis revealed that he is willing to allow a maximum of two such days in any one academic year. During this school year we have opted to support the Children in Need and Comic Relief events.
As Children in Need is scheduled for Friday 16th November, we will be holding a non-uniform day on this date. If students wish to take part they should make a £1 donation to the charity via their form tutor. All money will be collected in prior to the actual day.
The school rules regarding jewellery will remain in force on this and all future non-uniform days as they are linked to our health and safety policy in school.

Therefore, please ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for your son or daughter as they will leave the school premises after lesson 6 has finished at 3:15pm.
